Transmog & Character Appearance
Updated 2026-09-16
Transmog lets you customize equipment appearance, while a separate viewing option lets you keep the original visual experience. Your choice of what to see does not prevent you from collecting appearances.
Choose your view
Visit a transmogrifier in a city to configure outfits or disable transmog. Classic Mode starts with transmog disabled. With it off, you see the equipment other players wear rather than their chosen appearances.
You can still configure your own appearance for other players, and hidden helm or cloak settings remain visible even to people who disable transmog.
Dungeon appearances
When a bind-on-pickup Uncommon or Rare dungeon item is looted, its appearance goes to all eligible looters. This reduces the need to roll against an actual equipment upgrade just to collect an appearance.
Epic raid appearances work differently: they belong to the player who acquires the item and binds it. Do not apply the shared dungeon rule to every raid drop.
Match the item type
Transmog follows item-type rules. Plate appearances apply to plate and cloth appearances to cloth. A Paladin wearing a cloth item needs a valid cloth appearance for that slot; class identity alone does not turn the equipped piece into plate.
Level requirements
Low-level characters cannot use high-level appearances until level 60, when level restrictions are removed for valid appearances. Cosmetic-only items are an exception.
Poor and Common items grant appearances when looted without requiring a bind step. This makes low-level and unbound gear useful for appearance collectors.
